In this guide, I will be giving you a step-by-step guidance on how to upload and optimise your product descriptions for SEO on your Shopify store. It is very important to optimise your product descriptions so that they rank well on the search engines such as Google.
First, you will need to write unique and quality product descriptions. If you are dropshipping and your products already have descriptions, you will need to replace those with unique descriptions because there are likely to be hundreds of stores that are already using the same product descriptions. You can employ a freelancer to write up your product descriptions. Do not forget to proofread all product descriptions and check them using a plagiarism checker as a lot of the time, freelancers do like to cut corners and copy content from other websites.
It is important to optimise your title so that your product ranks well on Google. As a rule of thumb, you product title should be a detailed description of what the product is whilst incorporating the keywords that not only accurately describe your product but also incorporate a long-tail keyword that people would search for on Google or other search engines. Do not make your product title/name awfully long. Strike the right balance. In the current example, our product is named "Pinky's Celebrity Club Instagram Bot for Real Followers and Likes". The section of the product name in bold is our long-tail keyword that people search for on Google. The first part is the name of the software. As you can see, the product name reads very well and is spam free. It also describes very succinctly what the product is and what it does without the reader having to look at the pictures or read the description.
The next step will be to add your unique product description. It is recommended that you add one or two hyperlinks to relevant resources to enhance the user experience. Inside your product description, it is advisable to include your main keyword / product name as well as 5 or so additional keywords that describe your product. It is important to have a range of relevant keywords as Google and other search engines use the keywords for establishing the context of a product and then ranking it appropriately. Do not keyword stuff or engage in spammy practices as these could jeopardise the flow of the content and damage user experience.
Headings are great because they help to break down lengthier product descriptions and they also assist with on-page SEO. Where possible, do try to include some keywords in the headings as this will help with the SEO.
Next, you will need to add image alt text which basically tells Google what your image is about. Google and Bing for example, cannot read your images and they use image alt text to interpret what your images are about.
The "Page title" or meta title and meta description is what appears on the Google search engine results page or SERP for short and it looks like this:
The meta title is the clickable link in blue or purple in the above example and the meta description is the writing in black. Normally, your meta meta title will be your product name and your meta description will be an enticing and sales-driven summary of what your product is about. It is important to make your metas "clickable". Try to intrigue the potential visitors with something catchy but do not overdo it. Make sure to include your keyword and its alternatives in the meta title and meta description as this is how visitors will find your products. Also, make sure to INCLUDE YOUR KEYWORDS 5 OR SO TIMES IN YOUR DESCRIPTION.
If you have many collections, your product may fall under multiple collections (categories). You therefore need to know your collections inside out. To assign products to collections, simply start typing the name of your collection and the tag field with populate with existing collection suggestions.
I have covered the basics, but when you access your product editor on Shopify, you will see some other options that you would like to fill out.
